SAIM Graduating Class - 2007-2008Role of Instructor

The instructor must take proper care and precautions in the planning and supervision of academic work so that an honest effort is encouraged. The instructor is encouraged to communicate the requirements and materials allowed for assignments, tests, and examinations. The instructor or substitute instructors are responsible for the supervision of all tests and examinations.

Role of Student

As a student you are expected to behave maturely and with honor. Respect for the principles of truth and honesty are important to the student and the instructor. Southern Alberta Institute of Massage expects that both the student and instructor will conduct themselves accordingly.

Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty such as plagiarism, lying, cheating by copying or bringing written answers into the examination room, or stealing examinations will result in disciplinary action. The following examples constitute dishonesty, but are not limited to all forms of dishonesty:

  • plagiarism
  • lying
  • using unauthorized materials or communicating information without permission in a test or examination
  • copying the work of another in assignment, test or examination
  • tampering with or stealing academic resources
  • altering marks
  • helping, or attempting to help, a person to commit an act of dishonesty including completion of a part or total of any assignment or examination for a student by another student.

Consequences

  • The first offence, for an act of dishonesty will be at the discretion of the instructor, subject to the following guidelines:
  • the penalty may be the reduction of the grade on the assignment, test, examination, reduction in the final mark, expulsion from the course, or other penalties the instructor deems reasonable.
  • the penalty will normally be reduction of the final grade which may result in a zero grade.

An offence will be considered to be your second offence, if prior to commission of that offence, you had received a warning regarding that first offence. If a second offence has occurred while the student is attending the Southern Alberta Institute of Massage, the said student will be expelled, receive a zero grade for programs involved, and be withdrawn from programs not completed.

Procedures

If the instructor collects evidence of an act of dishonesty, the following will occur:

  • the instructor will notify student of the discovery of the alleged act
  • the instructor will meet with student, present evidence if any, and request explanation
  • once explanation has been heard, the instructor will take into consideration explanation and any evidence presented
  • if instructor deems that an act of dishonesty has occurred, instructor will notify student, in the presence of the president or acting president, of the penalty and appeal procedures
  • the instructor will formally notify student, the president, and registrar in writing
  • the registrar will keep records of the violations, including any evidence, students explanation, and the penalty.
  • These records will be retained for a whole academic year and may be destroyed after.

Once receiving written notification, the registrar will take the following procedures:

  • the registrar will examine your record to determine if a second or subsequent violation has occurred
  • if a second or subsequent violation has occurred, the office of the registrar shall enter in students record the grades required as addressed in the Consequences section above and shall forward students record to the President
  • the president or registrar will notify the student of the expulsion

If the student suspects a violation of dishonesty it is the students job to make the instructor aware of the violation.

Appeal

If a student is dismissed from the program, he or she may appeal by notifying the registrars office in writing within seven (7) days of the date on the dismissal letter. Reasons for appealing must be clearly stated. The situation will then be reviewed and a final judgment will be made.
